A box of wills, handwritten diaries, court reports, photographs, travel journals, letters in an archive. How do we turn experience – our own or others’ – into a compelling story? This one-day writing workshop will explore the connections between our past and our imagination. On this creative writing course, you’ll use our Suffolk histories to inspire strong, evocative fiction, letting records of the past prompt you into creativity. Discover how the immediacy of archives allows us to engage imaginatively and creatively with histories of individuals, places and situations in ways that can help us reflect on our own contemporary lives. Led by Amanda, an international bestselling and award-winning writer and English and Creative Writing tutor at the University of Suffolk, you’ll develop skills in both poetry and prose writing, and learn how imaginative responses to the past can inform narrative, character development, and plot in your writing. We’ll tackle the fundamentals of good storytelling and discover the power of imaginative memory when connected to the past. Tea and coffee will be provided but please bring your own packed lunch.
