The extraordinary career of a 17th century merchant seaman, who became a Vice-Admiral. Lawson played a major role in the English civil wars, the Restoration, the Anglo-Dutch Wars and the beginnings of the transformation of England into a global political and economic power. Until now he has been largely ignored by historians.
