Corporal Sidney James Day VC
Portrait of Corporal Sidney James Day of the 11th Battalion who was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery. Day was in charge of a bombing section clearing trenches in enemy hands. He alone bombed his way through to neighbouring troops, once even seizing a bomb that landed in a trench, throwing it out and so saving the lives of those in the trench. After completing the clearing of the trench he remained at his post for 66 hours, coming under intense and hostile shell, grenade and rifle fire.
