Kilner is a notable Bury St Edmunds family.  Charles was the eldest son of Charles Scott Kilner, physician and surgeon, and the family lived on Hatter Street for many years.  Charles junior trained as an architect and by 1911 was living and working in London.

Charles joined the 28th London Regiment as a private, s/no 1407 and was first deployed on 26 October 1914.  On 15 August 1915 he was made 2/Lt in the 1st Suffolks.

There is a piece in the Bury Free Press which states he was wounded on 3rd October and died on 8th.

The war diary confirms that information, showing he died of wounds, at the 85th Field Ambulance, on 8th October.
