Worlingham Drama Group (2359)
In 2015 Lowestoft Record Office was given a number of documents that charted the activities of Worlingham Drama Group (2359). Formed in 1970, the group initially struggled to attract performers, but within a few years it was able to mount at least two productions every year.
The collection includes a wide range of ephemera from posters and programmes to cast lists and newspaper reviews as well as photographs and correspondence. The accompanying administrative paperwork, such as minutes from meetings and newsletters, offers a fascinating insight into the world of amateur dramatics which arguably enjoyed a renaissance in the late 20th century. Prior to the group being disbanded in 2013 they treated theatregoers to a diverse programme of productions including The importance of Being Earnest, Cinderella and The 39 Steps, as well as my personal favourite (based on the title alone!), They Came from Mars and Landed Outside the Farndale Avenue Church Hall in Time for the Townswomen’s Guild’s Coffee Morning. Whether you are a serious student of the genre or simply harbour a secret desire to walk the boards, this collection is a must-see and is available for viewing only at Lowestoft Record Office.
