The catch was landed directly from the trawlers and drifters to the market, where it was sold by auction. Lowestoft had the principal herring fishing fleet in the country – during herring season special trains with insulated fish vans carried the fresh ‘Silver Darlings’ packed in ice to inland markets. Others were packed in salt and exported or smoked locally.
