Remembering VE Day
VE celebrations and remembrance services have been held on the 8th May since the end of the war. For many this was a time to remember those who lost their lives during the conflict, and not all saw it as an occasion for celebration.
In Ipswich a programme of events were held for the one year anniversary of VE Day in 1946. In this programme for the celebrations the Mayor acknowledges that the challenging times continue dealing with the after effects of six years of war.
Memories of the end of the war from veterans and civilians alike have been captured through oral history recordings, such as the following from Suffolk Archives collections.
