W=F*d: An exhibition of printmaking

Tower Street Print Project Exhibition: From 17th December 2020 – 6th January 2021*

*from 24th December the Hold will be closed until further notice for the Christmas break, and then as Suffolk enters Tier 4 restrictions

Oyster Community Press CIC, a community arts organisation based in Ipswich and Ipswich Jobcentre Plus are joining forces again this winter to help local people who are out of work, feel closer to getting a job through learning the art form of printmaking. Work coaches are currently referring people to taster sessions at the Tower Street Print Project in Ipswich, where they can have a go at printmaking and find out more about the Press Ahead printmaking courses which are scheduled to begin there in the New Year.

Julia Nix, DWP District Manager said “We have been keen to enhance our services and we know that Oyster Community Press have been successful in helping people get into jobs or education, by teaching them printmaking on their Press Ahead courses. Some of our staff have tried printmaking themselves and our work coaches are confident that their clients will find learning a new skill and working in a group to put on an exhibition, a great way to prepare for interviews and returning to work.”

Alison Smyth, a Director of Oyster Press said “Our Press Ahead courses provide a unique way for people to regain their self-confidence through learning the visual language of printmaking and using it to create a professionally curated exhibition.  We are delighted that our courses for next year are funded by the European Social Fund so that they are free for anyone to attend who is over 16 years, claiming benefits and finding job hunting a struggle.” Taster sessions for the Press Ahead courses which start on the 18th of January are available from the 7th December and may be booked by Work Coaches at Jobcentre Plus or by contacting Oyster Community Press CIC at or texting 07990553662.

If you want to see for yourself just what you can learn on a Press Ahead course, W=F*d, an exhibition of printmaking created by students on Press Ahead courses earlier this year, can be seen at the foyer space of  The Hold from the 17th of December to the 6th January 2021. The exhibition explores the theme of Work in the 21st century and is free to visit.
