Y is for Yachting
Some of the most sought after yachts are the Broads One Design aka Brown Boats. They were designed in 1900 by Linton Hope, at the invitation of the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club, for both inland sailing on the rivers and broads and for the more difficult and challenging conditions off-shore. The first five boats were all built in 1900 and have the delightful names of Dunlin, Teal, Flittermouse, Curlew and Peewit, and the trend for using the names of birds for this class continued all the way through to the last one, No. 87, built in 2009, Flamingo.
Unlike the modern boats in this class the early ones were all built of cedar but construction changed to mahogany in 1912 with the last wooden brown boat, Greylag, being built in 1939. This classic yacht class was extended and revitalised in 1987 when Merganser, No. 32, was built using Bittern, which was built in 1910, as a plug. All of the later Brown Boats were built from either a mould of Bittern, No. 12 or Shearwater, No. 26.
Amazingly most of the early yachts are still going strong and can still be seen yacht racing making this a true design classic. If you want to know more the minutes of the Broads One Design Club for 1911-1972 are held at the Lowestoft Record Office, (accession 1793).
